Chiropractic Care for Seniors

Aches and pains are as much a part of the aging process as wrinkles and fine lines, but good chiropractic care can keep the spine strong and allow seniors to maintain normal activity long into their golden years.

How does age affect the spine?
As the spine degenerates over time, structures that handle balance and coordination don’t function as well. This deterioration can lead to arthritis, stiffness, circulatory problems, constipation, and more.

Conventional medicine vs. Chiropractic care
The traditional treatment for many age-related problems is pharmaceutical. Over-the-counter and prescription medications do provide some relief from the aches and pains of age, but don’t affect the root cause of the problems. Medicines also can be expensive and, what’s worse, they can cause unpleasant side effects.

Research supports chiropractic care’s role in a healthy senior lifestyle. A three-year study of senior citizens revealed that patients who received chiropractic care spent fewer days in hospitals and nursing homes than non-chiropractic patients. Here are three reasons seniors should consider contacting a chiropractor:

  1. Better range of motion – By aligning the spine, chiropractic care allows joints and muscles to move properly. Having a full range of motion allows seniors to perform the kinds of daily tasks that can mean the difference between living independently and entering assisted care.
  2. Improved wellness – A chiropractor’s job isn’t just to patch wounds or alleviate pains. Regular adjustments keep the spine aligned correctly, allowing the body to heal itself and stay well.
  3. Better quality of care – Eighty-eight percent of chiropractic patients reported that spinal manipulations were effective, and 59% said they were “very” or “completely” satisfied with their care, according to a report in the May 2009 issue of Consumer Reports. Chiropractic patients’ high level of satisfaction stands in contrast to the 34% of patients who say they’re highly satisfied with care from their primary-care doctor.

While chiropractic care can’t turn back the clock, it can help your body remain able to do the things you love.
